| It is located in Pilar square, or
square, by the river Ebro in Zaragoza. There stands the impressive
Basilica del Pilar. The Baroque Basilica is a treasure in itself.
There were at least two previous temples. One of
the Gothic style was built in 1515 and an earlier Romanesque style
that was destroyed by fire in 1443.
The present church was designed by Felipe Sanchez
Herrera "El Mozo." Construction began in 1681 and the ships were completed
in 1718. It placed the altarpiece and the choir, which earlier belonged to
the temple.
Years later, under the reign of Fernando VI
architect Ventura Rodríguez took charge of the works and modify the
project, building the Santa Capilla de la Virgen and adding the
lateral domes and towers. The towers not be completed until
mid-twentieth century. El resultado es un impresionante edificio de ladrillo,
con tejas policromadas, cúpulas y torres.
The result is an impressive brick building with
polychrome tiles, domes and towers.
